July Photo Journal

Some shared views from my vantage point:

Breath of beauty in the midst of a busy city - now that I have a “regular job” again and am not solely dedicated to writing, I incorporate at least one daily walk around the office building block to refresh my creative soul and delight in the Lord in a new location and vocation. These lovely flowers are a welcome and wonderful respite from the gray concrete of the cityscape. They remind me that beauty can flourish in the most unlikely places and that light shines even brighter in the darkness.

Cool Damp Sunset Road - There is something refreshing, haunting, lonely and peaceful about this photo. The colors are cool, even the yellows of the sunset. The road is long and mostly empty. The cars appear to be mere shadows. I don’t know what the future holds or where it will take me, but I know the One who guides my footsteps and guards my life. And with Him, I can do anything and go anywhere. I do not fear the road ahead, no matter what it looks like. All my hope is the One who is leading me on.

Brilliant and Blazing Flowers of SoCal Summer - The sun hit the flowers and ignited their colors to a vibrancy not visible any other way. May it be so for me that the Son shines on me in such a way that His glory and majesty are revealed in the colors of my life.

Enjoying the Moment and Savoring Daily Delights - This is a photo from the last week before I accepted an offer for a “regular job.” I remember thinking to myself that I wasn’t going to entertain any notions of worry and that instead I would enjoy every moment right up to the end. I didn’t want to waste any time on fear of what the future held or disappointment in having to return to the corporate world. I purposed in my heart to delight in the Lord each day and not let anything steal my joy and peace.

The Yellow-Petaled Road - The Lord decorates even the ground that I walk on. It’s amazing to me to see how the Lord takes time to create delightful paths for my feet to walk on and my heart to dance along.

May Photo Journal & Pondering

Here are some photos from my monthly wanderings and wonderings with the Lord.

Taking a moment to pause and not just smell the roses but also enjoy their beauty in contrast to and in community with the surrounding environment - plants, sidewalk, sky, soil. Soaking in the moment and all its wonder revealing God’s goodness, infinite attention to detail and ability to continually create new and beautiful life even in a broken and messy world.

In the center of this flower, a tiny little bee is busy harvesting nectar to be used in the creation of honey. As I watch this little bee go about his business, I am in awe of how complex and yet simple God’s design is. It is simple because both the bee and the flower simply do what comes natural to them. It is complex because they are two vastly different creatures who are unable to communicate with one another yet together they collaborate to create food (honey) for another wholly different creature (human beings). It’s a delicate design that is strong enough to withstand wind and storm and eons of time.

Tilting my head to catch a sunset and stand in awe as I delight in another opportunity to watch God paint the sky for me, moment to moment. I never tire of marveling at His creativity and seeking His creativity in the place where He has planted me. In these moments, I feel so safely tucked away in the shelter of His wings - warm, cozy and comforted with the heartbeat of His peace and joy.

Here, I stand and reflect on the reflection of the clouds in the stream, these atmospheric wanderers in the sky. Clouds take shape and transform and move to wherever the Lord sends them and to do whatever He has purposed for them to do. In a way, the Spirit-led life is like that - yielding to the leading of the Spirit, sensitive to the reshaping and refining touch of the Potter’s hands, moving in rhythm with the breath of God that blows us wherever He purposes, whenever He wills and to do whatever His heart invites us to do.

I am humbled by the power of God’s limitless creativity. Every sunset is unique. Even more than this, every second of every sunset is a unique act of creativity. This gentle yet fiery sunset reminds me that that same creative power is at work in every second of every aspect of my life. The beauty of the sunset pales in comparison to the beauty the Lord sees in me and the beauty I am discovering in Him.

March Musings and Meditations

Gazing up with the Birds of Paradise - This view gives me pause to think about how humbling myself gives me new perspectives of creation and humanity that I would never have from looking down on those things. I am reminded that humility isn’t about humiliation. Instead, for me, it’s about meeting people where they are (not asking them to come up to where I am), serving those that often go unseen or unacknowledged (and in so doing, seeing what Love looks like) and gaining new and deeper understanding of who God is.

Bee in Paradise - I think bees are so cute! And they play an important role in creation by pollinating countless flowers that beautify our world and making honey, which is delicious! Also, honey is half of what the Promised Land is made of (milk and honey). I look forward to the world to come when we are reunited to creation as we were in the garden before the Fall and there is no more fear separating us from each other.

Arc de Fleur - Luscious colors of delicate flowers against a cool, crisp blue sky. It’s hard to comprehend that all this is for my delight. God created all of this just for me to enjoy it and delight in Who He Is as a creator. It’s amazing to me that He is my Friend who delights in seeing me delighted. That is both exhilaratingly wonderful and monumentally humbling.

Tree Lounging - I love the casual curiosity in this adorable squirrel’s eyes! He is perfectly safe, resting comfortably and peering nonchalantly at me. I so need to remember that this is how I too was created to live - perfectly safe in the Lord, resting in the shelter of His wings and unintimidated by anyone or anything around me, knowing full well that the Lord is my Protector, Provider, Comforter and so much more.

Light Filtering Canopy - As i pause underneath this tree canopy, I can’t help but think about how small I am in comparison to much of creation. And yet, God placed humanity at the top of creation - to rule and reign over everything. We made a mess of things pretty quick with the Fall. But the Lord still trusts us to steward the earth and all that is in it. He still gives us free will to choose what we will do, how we will invest His gifts and how we will impact the world in which we live. I am stunned at His decision to trust us, still and after all we’ve done. But He has good plans and we are somehow a part of that good plan. His mercy truly carries me through each day and gives me new life with each breath. And new things to ponder about Him.

February Photo Journal

For this post, I want to share with you my joy and wonder at the Lord’s creation. I’ve curated some photos from my daily walks and added notes of what’s on my mind and in my heart as I delight in these photos again.

Where do you find it the easiest to connect with the Lord, seeing His face and hearing His voice?

Seeding Peace Clouds - shifting my gaze upward to acknowledge the beauty of my Creator that is evident in His creation, in every second of time. These clouds took my breath away and compelled me to stop and soak in the beauty of the Artist.

Resting in a Magnolia - perched above at a safe distance, this little one sits and watches the world and me pass by. He reminds me to be aware of the life all around me, to observe and acknowledge the wonder of creation and to enjoy where I am. This encourages me to slow down a little more in life so that I can take in more peace and joy.

Autumnal Blessings - I love the vibrancy of this moment - the leaves and the sky are in brilliant contrast. They speak of the beauty that exists when two opposites are brought beside one another so that they can reveal something greater in the other than is possible on its own. People do that for one another, also. They shine a light on features and attributes that might otherwise go unnoticed or be less impactful.

A quiet beach, somewhere in SoCal, lulls me into a calm that allows for a freshening perspective and playful experimentation. The icy waves cool the wind that briskly kisses my face and swirls my hair around. I am in awe of the crushing peace of the unrelenting waters of grace that created this unfathomable, untamable ocean.

Infinite Artwork - Every second of every sunset is a new and captivating painting that the Lord creates. And He does this every single day, everywhere. He is always doing a new thing - even with something as simple as a sunset. Every day I get to watch Him paint something new, with every second, in every aspect of creation. It’s moments like this when I am struck by how limitless He is - His creativity, attention to detail, subtle nuances, orchestrating intricate compositions constantly and fluidly moving and shifting elements to reveal some new view of His love. I am awed into silence almost before I begin to describe His incomprehensibility and infinitude. I cease trying to understand and simply allow His presence to permeate my soul and quiet me with His love.
